RICK AND TODD KELLY RIGHT ON THE PACE IN DARWIN

Jack Daniel’s Racing team-mates Rick and Todd Kelly are both right on the pace with the fifth and eighth fastest times respectively in practice for the SKYCITY Triple Crown at Hidden Valley in Darwin today.

Todd Kelly was fastest in Part A and Part B of practice at the 2.9-kilometre circuit today aboard the #7 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore, ending the day with eighth fastest time overall.

Crucially for Todd Kelly, he did not use an additional set of tyres in Part C of practice, saving them for qualifying later in the weekend.

Rick Kelly used Part B of practice to work on car set-up options for the #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore, before hitting the top of the timesheets part way through Part C of practice as the first driver to break into the one minute and nine seconds time bracket.

Rick Kelly, who finished the day as fifth fastest, is confident ahead of tomorrow’s elimination qualifying and 34-lap race, but did flag the idea of allowing each car a set of dedicated, new practice tyres at each event.

Will Davison put Holden on the top of the timesheets with the fastest time in practice at Hidden Valley Raceway today ahead of Shane Van Gisbergen and Craig Lowndes.

JACK DANIEL’S RACING QUOTEBOARD

Rick Kelly - #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore:

“We're pretty happy with the pace but today for us was learning,” said Rick Kelly.

“We had a strict program that we needed to stick to throughout the session to learn a bit about some things on the Jack Daniel’s Commodore.

“We stuck to that so the first bit of the session for us was frustrating because we were learning things and not going for outright pace, which meant that we were a fair way back.

“I think the car is now in a reasonable position for tomorrow for qualifying, which is great.

“It is frustrating though in practice with the tyres everyone's got, you don't know where you're positioned.

“It makes it very difficult to know how you're placed for qualifying tomorrow. In my opinion everyone should be allowed to have a set of green tyres for practice so that we can go out there and have the session as an extremely good comparison in terms of where you are.

“In Adelaide, NZ and Bahrain you get new tyres for practice so it would be like that. It's a bit frustrating but we press on.”

Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore:

“We're pretty happy with the Jack Daniel’s Commodore,” said Todd Kelly.

“I didn’t do that many miles in Part B of practice and tried to save the tyres, so we ran the same set in Part B and Part C.

“All the guys in front of us put a second set of tyres on, so we've saved a set of tyres today that we can use in qualifying tomorrow. So hopefully that will be a bit of an advantage.

“The Jack Daniel’s Commodore seems pretty fast so I'm quite excited about tomorrow.”

TODD KELLY FIFTH WHILE RICK SMASHES LAP RECORD IN TASMANIA

Jack Daniel’s Racing driver Todd Kelly has scored his first top five finish of the season with a strong drive to fifth place in the first race of the Falken Tasmania Challenge at Symmons Plains Raceway in Launceston today.

Kelly, a race winner in Tasmania last year, qualified his #7 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore in 11th position but used a combination of strategy and strong car pace to move up into the top five.

The 29-year-old entered pit lane at the end of the first lap to complete his compulsory 50-litre fuel stop but elected to keep his soft tyres fitted for the entire 42-lap race.

The decision paid off and Kelly, who also survived a door-rubbing clash with James Courtney down the back straight, progressively moved up the order to grab fifth place, his third top 10 finish this season. The finish lifted Kelly four spots in the points into 19th place in the standings.

Meanwhile Rick Kelly smashed the Symmons Plains Raceway V8 Supercar lap record with a 51.4713 second time on lap six of today’s race. The previous mark, set in 2005 by Steven Richards, was 52.0170 seconds.

Rick Kelly, who becomes the youngest driver to ever compete at 100 Australian Touring Car Championship events this weekend, started from sixth position and ran as high as second as he waited until lap 22 to make his compulsory fuel stop.

At that stop, Rick Kelly switched from the soft tyres to the harder Dunlop control tyre for the second half of the race.

As other cars with the soft tyre fitted caught up to Rick Kelly’s #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore, the two-time Bathurst winner fell down the order.

A frustrated Rick Kelly still scored yet another solid collection of points in today’s race, dropping one spot in the points to sit sixth in the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship Standings after seven races.

Garth Tander led home a Holden 1-2 by holding off Russell Ingall to win today’s first race for the weekend, ahead of Steven Johnson.

A 20-minute qualifying session and 84-lap race will complete this year’s fourth event tomorrow at the 2.4-kilometre circuit.

JACK DANIEL’S RACING QUOTEBOARD

Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore:

“We need results like that for the rest of the year to get back up to where we should be in the championship,” said Todd Kelly.

“It was a good run. The Jack Daniel’s Commodore wasn’t too bad but it wasn’t quite there.

“We did the whole race on the soft tyres and that was a bit of a last minute decision.

“After what the car felt like in the race there and what we’ve learned, we would have made a fair few changes to the set-up of the car to optimise the soft tyre.

“So I had to look after the tyres and really not push too hard towards the end given that I used those tyres the whole race.

“That race has certainly given us a lot more information for when we run that strategy the next time.

Re the contact with James Courtney:

“I didn’t need to be that way,” said Todd Kelly.

“Courtney fired in underneath me at the hairpin and fired into my door quite hard, so then I gave him a bit of ‘agro’ down the straight and he ended up going off on his own.

“It’s always the plan to try and pass without hitting each other but it doesn’t always go to plan.”

Rick Kelly - #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore:

“To be honest I’m pretty disappointed with that,” said Rick Kelly.

“We were running fourth for a while and then up to second with other people pitting in front of us.

“We just, quite simply, did the wrong strategy and then we had a really long pit stop, which killed our race unfortunately.

“It’s a bit of a bummer and hopefully we can milk some more out of our strategy tomorrow to make up for today.

“We should have really been in the top three there in my opinion.

“It’s a shame that we weren’t, so as a team we need to work out where we can improve.”

KELLYS SHOW PODIUM PACE IN TASMANIA

Jack Daniel’s Racing team-mates Todd and Rick Kelly have both shown that they have what it takes to score podium results in 2009 on a day of sensational speed but no reward for the pair at Symmons Plains Raceway in Tasmania today.

The brothers, who are racing as full-time team-mates for the first time as part of the new Kelly Racing operation this year, both showed that their new outfit, in only its fourth championship event, has the pace to match the front-runners.

Todd Kelly qualified in second position this morning, his best qualifying performance since the Oran Park in 2007 to earn the best starting position for Jack Daniel’s Racing this season.

Todd Kelly grabbed the lead momentarily on the opening lap aboard the #7 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore, before settling into second position.

After one pit stop for fuel and rear tyres on lap 26, the 29-year-old effectively only had Jamie Whincup ahead of him when on lap 44 his engine dropped power and he was forced to retire.

Meanwhile, brother Rick Kelly, who had qualified in 14th place, was showing the same great pace as his brother to be steadily rising up the order in the #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore.

In his 100th V8 Supercar event, by mid-race distance Rick Kelly was running in what was effectively third position with both his compulsory fuel stops completed, right on the tail of Jamie Whincup and Will Davison.

Rick Kelly started the 84-lap race on the softer option tyre, making his first fuel stop at the end of the first lap and then switching onto the harder control tyre at his second fuel stop on lap 36.

Rick then spun off the track at the first corner, unable to avoid oil and debris left on the track as a result of an accident involving James Courtney.

While he was able to recover and rejoin the circuit in fifth place, Rick was forced to pit to replace the flat-spotted tyres as a result of the high speed spin, dropping him down to 15th place.

Soon after, contact with Michael Patrizi exiting the hairpin bent Rick’s steering and he was forced to complete a lengthy stop to repair his car, ending the race classified five laps down in 27th place.

Jamie Whincup won today’s race ahead of Will Davison and Fabian Coulthard.

The fifth event of the 2009 V8 Supercar Championship Series will be the Skycity Triple Crown at Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin, Northern Territory on June 19-21.

JACK DANIEL’S RACING QUOTEBOARD

Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore:

“The Jack Daniel’s Commodore was very fast,” said Todd Kelly.

“After the first pit stop we found that the rear tyre pressures were extremely low. I was struggling with the rear of the car up until the stop, so once we had the next set of tyres on, we had a car as good as anyone out there.

“Unfortunately we lost an engine so that was the end of our day.”

Rick Kelly - #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore:

“As a whole this was our worst points event of the season but we showed what we’re capable of today,” said Rick Kelly.

“I was running third on the track there with car speed to win the race.

“The whole team should gain real confidence from this and to be honest I’m just extremely frustrated.

“As I came over the (start/finish) line there was oil on the track and I couldn’t do anything about it and spun.

“We just need to take this frustration to Darwin and use it as motivation to turn this into results and I’m confident we can do that.”

JACK DANIEL'S RACING COMMEMORATES RICK KELLY'S CENTURY

Todd P10 and Rick P14 in practice at Symmons Plains

Jack Daniel’s Racing has commemorated Rick Kelly’s record-breaking 100th event with a surprise for the 26-year-old at Symmons Plains Raceway in Launceston, Tasmania today.

Kelly, who becomes the youngest driver to start 100 V8 Supercar/Australian Touring Car Championship events this weekend in Tasmania, was surprised with a gift from his team, presented by brother and team-mate Todd Kelly, during a media call in pit lane this morning.

Rick Kelly was presented with a large pictorial canvas this morning, capturing his successful career to date, including images of his debut event at Queensland Raceway in 2001, his two Bathurst wins in 2003 and 2004 and his 2006 championship victory.

Also included in the canvas were several podiums appearances that the brothers have shared together at events such as the Nitro SuperGP and Clipsal 500, as well as the debut event for the new Kelly Racing operation earlier this year, Rick Kelly’s first appearance in Jack Daniel’s Racing colours.

Rick Kelly will also run a special bonnet in Tasmania this weekend, with ‘Rick’s Century’ adorning the bonnet of the #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore this weekend at Symmons Plains.

In practice today both Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodores faired well, with Todd Kelly 10th fastest and Rick Kelly finishing the day in 14th position on the timesheets after the two major segments of practice held today.

Todd Kelly, who won the Saturday race at the 2.4-kilometre circuit last year, was also able to participate in the first segment of practice, allocated for rookie drivers, endurance event co-drivers and those outside the top 15 in the championship standings.

Greg Murphy was fastest in practice today ahead of Lee Holdsworth and Mark Winterbottom.

Elimination-format qualifying, the top 10 shootout and the opening race of the weekend will be held tomorrow, while a further qualifying session and longer distance race will be staged on Sunday.

JACK DANIEL’S RACING QUOTEBOARD

Rick Kelly - #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore:

“We didn’t expect much from today because the tyres we had for practice were not that great,” said Rick Kelly.

“We’re pretty happy to be P14 with that in mind.

“This track is one where we expect to get good results so we’ll be pushing hard tomorrow.

“It will be all about strategy in the race tomorrow so it’s going to be crucial to get it right.”

Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore:

“My Jack Daniel’s Commodore probably felt the best it’s been all year,” said Todd Kelly.

“The changes and improvements we have made between events have really been a big help.

“I’m really looking forward to seeing what the car is like on new tyres tomorrow, because today it felt like we were headed in the right direction.”

RICK KELLY BECOMES YOUNGEST DRIVER TO START 100 EVENTS IN TASMANIA

Jack Daniel’s Racing driver Rick Kelly will forge his name into the history books when he starts his 100th V8 Supercar event at the Falken Tasmania Challenge at Symmons Plains Raceway near Launceston this weekend.

At 26 years of age, Kelly will become the youngest driver in the 50-year history of the Australian Touring Car Championship to start 100 rounds.

The 2006 V8 Supercar Champion and two-time Bathurst winner will wrestle the mantle from brother and Jack Daniel’s Racing team-mate Todd Kelly, who was the previous record holder when he reached the century mark at Oran Park in 2007.

Rick Kelly will become the 30th driver to compete in 100 ATCC events, following in the footsteps of legends such as Peter Brock, Allan Moffat, Dick Johnson, Mark Skaife and John Bowe, who holds the all-time record at 225 events.

Kelly already holds a special place in the history books, as the youngest ever event winner and youngest Bathurst winner, achieving both feats when winning the 2003 Bathurst 1000 alongside Greg Murphy at the tender age of 20 years, eight months and 25 days.

Kelly will be aged 26 years, four months and 12 days when he takes to the track aboard the #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore at Symmons Plains Raceway.

At age 18, Kelly made his V8 Supercar debut at the Queensland 500 in Ipswich in 2001, partnered with Nathan Pretty in a Kmart Racing Holden Commodore VX.

Although still relatively young in age, Kelly has amassed one of the most impressive records in V8 Supercars in his career to date, which has been exclusively in Holden Commodore machinery.

Kelly won back-to-back Bathurst crowns with Murphy in 2003 and 2004, going on to win the 2006 V8 Supercar Championship Series title with the Kelly family-owned HSV Dealer Team.

Kelly, now driving for Jack Daniel’s Racing as part of the all-new Kelly Racing operation, is competing alongside his older brother Todd for the time as full-time team-mates.

The pair has paired up twice in their career for the V8 Supercar endurance races, finishing second at both Sandown and Bathurst in 2006.

Kelly has previous form at Symmons Plains, taking a race win at the short, demanding circuit in 2004. Brother Todd, who will start his 124th event in Tasmania, won the first race at the Symmons Plains venue last season, which was the first V8 Supercar race win for Jack Daniel’s.

JACK DANIEL’S RACING QUOTEBOARD

Rick Kelly - #15 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore:

QUESTION: It's a century for you in Tassie with 100 event starts. Are you one to look at milestones and statistics?

“Not really. It’s definitely not the sort of thing you think about too much. It does give you a refresher and make you realise just how long you’ve been in the category.

“One hundred rounds is quite a bit and it makes you feel a little bit old and makes you look at what you have achieved in your career at this point.

“I’m probably not thinking too much about that. I’m more focussed on thinking about the championship position I’ve got in front of me, which is something I’m really excited about.

“To be fifth in points at this early stage for the new team is a great success in itself.

“The Jack Daniel’s Racing crew and everyone within Kelly Racing is extremely excited about our position and excited about where we’re heading in the future, with the development items we’ve got in planning and just our future plans in general.

“Todd got a fantastic result at Symmons Plains last year and I’ve had a lot of pace there and some good results there in the past so I’m very excited about the weekend.

“We started the season aiming for a top five finish. Now we’re already aiming for a top three finish and that’s good progression at this point.

“Todd and myself are both aiming to bring home a trophy from one of the days at Symmons.”

Q: There have been three events so far and you’ve made a very good start to be fifth in the standings. Do you feel like there is stlll a lot more to come?

“Absolutely. I mean, by no means are we sitting around celebrating the position we’re in. We have team meetings quite regularly and we sit down and work out how we’re going to go about improving and being one of the most competitive teams out there.

“The guys within the team have got a lot of experience and all lot of great ideas on how we can progress from where we are at the moment to being up the front.

“That in itself excites me and there is a lot of enthusiasm and excitement from those key guys within the team as well.”

Todd Kelly - #7 Jack Daniel’s Racing Holden Commodore:

Q: It’s always good to return to a track where you’ve had a win in the past and in the case of Tassie it wasn’t that long ago.

“For sure. Both of the new Jack Daniel’s Commodores that we’ve built are quite good, but they’re not where we want them to be just yet.

“This weekend will be the first time that we’ve able to take our cars to the track and back-to-back it with information from my car from the second half of last year, which was a new car.

“It was obviously at this track that it performed really well, so it will be a good indication for us to see how far we’ve gone and how much we’ve improved the cars.

“Of course, we’re also hoping to have a really strong round there to try and get back a few championship points.”

Q: How similar is the car you drove at Symmons Plains last year to the 2009-spec Jack Daniel’s Racing Commodore?

“There are lots of things on the car that are different. The new chassis is a little bit different and a little bit of the running gear is different.

“We are going to go there with a very similar set-up to what I had last year, similar springs and similar geometry to what we had last time, and that will be a baseline set-up to try and see where we’re at.

“There are a lot of small things on the car that have been changed and slightly improved.”

Q: Last year at Symmons Plains was a weekend where you were obviously very fast, but it was also a case of everything going right. This year has showed that you need the speed as well as the luck, because while Rick is fifth in the championship, some DNFs see you down in 23rd.

"I just need to have a good, clean weekend. Of all the races this year I’ve not finished many of them. There have been two races where I’ve broken the steering and a race where I broke an axle.

“Of races of the races so far, there have been too many where I haven’t finished and scored any points.

“It's pretty bad where I’m sitting in the championship now and Symmons is a perfect place to try and turn that around. We need to be strong in practice and try to get the car up the front and get some serious points. We need to give Jack Daniel's and all our sponsors a good result as well.”
